Most women can find something to complain about when it comes to their bodies, and shopping for swimwear is not usually on the list of priorities.Stripping down to a swimming costume can come close to a near-death experience. And for those women with bigger busts, there’s a common complaint that there’s no swimwear that properly flatters their ample assets.
Of course, there are some who are happy to flaunt their frontage, but it’s generally those women who’ve had some outside help to increase their facade who are keen to put it on display.But actually, most of us would rather play them down as much as possible.
Get rid of any negative thoughts – there are SO many style tips to draw attention away from a big bust to give you the confidence to hit the beach running. From fabric, straps, colors, patterns and neckline to styles, support and accessories – it’s about understanding what works best for your body shape.
The most important thing to consider is support. Many women with large busts make the mistake of choosing swimwear with inadequate support. A hidden underwire or built in bra will help lift, support and contain the bust – so you can get out onto the beach volleyball court with nothing to hide and nothing to fear!
Julie Wiggins, owner of leading Perth swimwear manufacturer, Viva Swimwear, says women should look for swimsuits that are sized in proper bra sizes (not S,M,L) with the bra fitting firmly across the back and the wire sitting flat on the body.Viva manufactures unique three-piece swimwear for plus sizes as well as fuller busted women, which has a bra (sizes D to G), a tankini or wrap around top that goes over the bra and matching swim pants.
Fabric is foremost.To contain those curves, go for chlorine resistant swimwear manufactured from 100 per cent polyester or lycra.
Spaghetti is a no-go!The best support and coverage comes from wide straps and halterneck tops.Other styles that offer good support are the racer back or sporty look, especially with higher-cut armholes!
And always do the ‘toe test’ before you make a purchase – if your assets are intact after you’ve bent down and touched your toes – you’re good to go!
Be a little daring. Halter tops are best for big busts.And remember, showing a bit of cleavage is a great way of distracting attention from the ‘not-so-good’ bits.V-neck halter tops are also flattering, as they divide the chest making the bust appear smaller.The ‘V’ should be fairly deep, but not so deep that you get into trouble!Gathered, sash or crossover tops are other necklines that are flattering for bigger busts.
A good choice is a darker coloured or patterned top which can reduce the appearance of size of the bust. Mix it up a bit too – pair a gorgeous print which accentuates the good with a plain dark colour for the rest. Fabrics featuring vertical stripes are also good for reducing the appearance of the larger bust.
The secret when it comes to swimwear for bigger busts is to create a traditional hourglass outline, says Julie Wiggins, a Perth swimwear designer. “With the larger top, we have to balance the bottom – and accentuating or creating a waist will give a body definition and balance.If you’ve got great assets – use them, don’t lose them.”
